Born in Callao, Peru; he attended, Escuela de Bellas Artes (Fine Art and Graphic Art), for 5 years where he concentrated on drawing and painting. While attending art school, Miguel worked for “La Cronica”, “Hoy” and “El Observador”- newspapers of Lima- as their illustrator. He also designed posters and advertising designs for supermarket chains.
When Miguel migrated to United States in 1985, he carried the traditions and folklore of The Inca, native people of Peru. As their descendant, Miguel evokes the racial memory of his people through his mastery of brush, giving form to the guiding spirits of the ancient. His work is filled with powerful imagery which reflect human emotions, the forces of nature, and his own ancestry.
His work has been exhibited in several galleries in the N.Y.C. area, including the ETC Gallery, Gallery 2/20, the Art Student’s League Gallery, the Art Lab at Snug Habor and the Flushing Gallery; as well as Borough Hall, Jacob Javits Federal Building, Clove Lake Café and the Edgewater Plaza.
Miguel has also traveled Europe, Berlin and Holland showing his artwork.
He traveled to Italy with his wife, where he video graphed the film "Mediterraneo Hotel”, in Sorrento, Italy.
It is easy to see that Miguel Velandres is a well rounded and
gifted artist, a painter of noticeable and recognizable merit.
